89. 80, No. 1, September. More than 150 arts teachers, administrators, and school principals from around the country will gather in New York City on Thursday, December 2nd to learn about the Heritage School a highly successful "small school" in East Harlem that emphasizes the arts as part of a balanced curriculum and sends 70 percent of its senior class on to four year colleges. Seven years after Judith Burton founded Heritage School, her hand remains visible at that institution. And now the Teachers College art professor's fingerprints are evident in the new first ever standardized arts curriculum, introduced in New York City public schools this past fall. The architect of the course that took TC and Columbia students to New Orleans is a change agent who abhors a void He's probably best known around TC as the guy who hosts that cool live talk show series that's had Cornel West, Gloria Steinem, Frank Gehry and Edwidge Danticat as guests. But his work on the show Project Citizen doesn't begin to describe the breadth of Kelvin Sealey's activities at TC and Columbia. TC has strengthened its faculty and its administration, refurbished its campus and raised $155 million. Now it's time for some serious change. A key component of Teachers College's newly launched Campaign for Education Equity is demonstration projects that implement and test Campaign research in real communities, families and schools through programs that have the potential to become national models.

Mahzarin Banaji of Harvard and Anthony Greenwald of the University of Washington have done influential work showing that most whites, whatever their professed racial attitudes, are quicker to associate positive words with images of whites, and quicker to associate negative words with blacks. The test they developed, the Implicit Association Test, or IAT, has become one of the most common tools for measuring bias. Joshua Correll, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago, measures bias in a more dynamic way, looking at associations with danger. In one set of studies he had mostly white participants play a primitive video game in which they had to make split second "shoot/no shoot" decisions based on whether the figure on the screen was holding a gun. Most subjects, he found, were more trigger happy when presented with an image of a black man. But follow up studies have also shown that these biases can be sharply reduced, and in some cases even erased. When participants, for example, are shown images of well liked black public figures before taking the IAT, their anti black biases disappear. "We're finding that racial stereotyping and prejudice are extremely contextual," says Correll. "You can see real reductions in prejudice, and sometimes it actually reverses," crossing over into a sort of stereotypic affinity. And this, Correll argues, works to the advantage of someone like Obama. "You look at Obama, and he represents himself incredibly well," Correll says.

They are absolutely stunning to look at with their bright red tipped tails, in contrast to their somber gray bodies and black curved beaks. They nest in wood holes and lay their eggs inside the tree trunk. The Congo African parrot and Timneh African gray parrot are the other two species found among these parrots. They are one of the rarer species that nest alone, and are solitary or monogamous birds. They have a brilliant ability to mimic sounds, including human voices. They are by far the best talking parrots in the world. The Amazon parrot species were originally spotted in South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. They are medium sized and come in varied shades of green. They have a remarkable quality of imitating human speech and voice. The Amazon parrots native to the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, have been classified as extinct animals and no longer exist. There are in total only 23 species of Amazon Parrots left in the world today.
