Please contact our Alumni Program Coordinator Jennifer Chiu at . edu. au to RSVP. Students who RSVP will receive a link and password to take part in the QandA in the first week of next term. Earlier in Term 3, we were lucky enough to welcome Darren Dickson Newcomb HS alum 1977 1980 as a virtual guest speaker for students in five classes across two sessions. Darren left school after Year 10 and completed an apprenticeship in graphics reproduction, before deciding to pursue a career in surfboard shaping. 30+ years later, Dicko Surfboards has become a success and allows him to indulge his passion for surfing every day. The Alumni QandA took place just before schools went back into remote learning. Darren answered questions about his career pathway, following his dreams, achieving work life balance, starting a business, working with clients, the skills needed to become a surfboard shaper, and much more. He stressed the importance of choosing a career that you will enjoy. If you're a Newcomb ex student and haven't reached out to our Alumni Coordinator yet, please contact Jennifer at .

We would not encourage you to have them be alone in an activity room unless they are over 16 years of age. Even then the door should be left open and there should be a hall monitor. 1bQ: As we lose volunteers temporarily to sickness and other circumstances, what do we do if we cannot meet our staff to vulnerable person ratio?A: Thinking ahead and screening additional staff will be helpful for these occasions. It may be advantageous to have some ideas in your back pocket for needed open sessions where you combine all the children/youth/vulnerable adults but even in this case you will need to maintain ratios. The courts will hold you to the same level of protection and care even during the challenge of staff shortages. Back to TopA:Research in all areas of education has shown that low staff to child ratios are critical for learning to take place. Also, one of the ways an organization can demonstrate that they are fulfilling their duty of care to their staff and volunteers is to manage appropriately child to staff ratios. Program leaders must seek out funding to ensure that they can maintain low ratios. They can also enlist the support of volunteers, including parents and other family members, senior citizens or older teens. Volunteers, like other staff members, should be screened and have experience working with children and youth, and should be trained before they begin. These volunteers should have meaningful experiences and skills to share, thereby helping to build a community of learners.

S. Congress finally appropriated funding for what would become Hubble. The fledgling Hubble program suffered a massive blow in 1986, after the space shuttle Challenger exploded during liftoff, killing seven astronauts. NASA grounded its space fleet in the wake of the tragedy, leaving Hubblewhich depended on the shuttle for its transport and maintenancewithout a ride into orbit. Scientists made good use of the delay by upgrading the sensitivity of the telescopes instruments and refining its ground control software, but the added years of servicing and storage in a high tech clean room sent costs soaring. By the time the space shuttle Discovery finally lifted off in 1990 with Hubble tucked into its cargo bay, the project was seven years behind schedule and more than $1 billion over budget. Upon viewing Hubbles first images in 1990, NASA scientists were devastated to discover that its main focusing mirror had been polished to the wrong specifications. This spherical aberration was minisculeless than 1/50 the width of a strand of human hairyet it was enough to blur many of its photos. In the months that followed, the telescope became something of a national joke, and a Newsweek magazine cover even branded it a $1. 5 Billion Blunder. Redemption for NASA had to wait until December 1993, when a crew of spacewalking astronauts installed an instrument known as COSTAR, which used tiny mirrors to offset the glitch.
